  Hemp Seed Oil and Cancer

In response to the Video flighted on TV that claims that "Hemp Oil" cures cancer. The oil Rick Simpson calls "Hemp Oil", is in fact high Delta-9-Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) containing Marijuana Oil.

Hemptons does not stock or sell this Oil. We also don't know where to obtain the Oil as it is illegal to import, posses or sell this Oil in South Africa.

The Oil Hemptons stocks and sells is organic Hemp Seed Oil obtained by cold pressing the seed of the Cannabis Sativa or Hemp plant.

This Oil has a high Essential Fatty Acid content, but 0% THC and is indeed used in the treatment / prevention of cancer.

Hemp Seed Oil has long been recognised as one of the most versatile and beneficial substances known to man. Derived from Hemp seeds (a member of the achene family of fruits) it has been regarded as a superfood due to its high Essential Fatty Acid content and the unique ratio of Omega 3 to Omega 6 and Gamma Linolenic Acid (GLA) - 2:5:1. Hemp Seed Oil, is known to contain up to 5% of pure GLA, a much higher concentration than any other plant, even higher than Spirulina. For thousands of years, the Hemp plant has been used in elixirs and medicinal teas because of its healing properties and now medical science is zeroing in on the properties of its active substances.

It has been shown that the EFA's GLA, AA, EPA, and DHA have selective tumoricidal actions both in vitro and in vivo. These fatty acids seem to bring about their tumoricidal action by enhancing free radical generation in the tumour cells, whereas the formation of their cyclo-oxygenase and lipoxygenase products are not necessary for their selective cytotoxic action on tumor cells.

In addition, GLA and EPA have anti-mutagenic actions as well. Prostaglandin E1 (PGE1) derived from DGLA (that in turn is formed from GLA), prevented genetic damage induced by radiation, benzo (a) pyrene and diphenylhydantoin.

This suggests that presence of adequate amounts of GLA and EPA in the cells protects them from the DNA damaging actions of various mutagens and carcinogens.

Hence, it is likely that damage to DNA cannot be prevented and tumour cells are not eliminated when cells are deficient in EFAs. This may lead to an increase in the risk of cancer

It therefore stands to reason, that supplementation of a good source of EFAs, such as Hemp Seed Oil can and do assist in preventing cancer as well as helping in fighting and eradicating it.

Hemp Seed Oil also contains a compound, cannabinoid, known as CBD. It is a non-psycoactive compound found in Hemp. Studies have found that Cannabidiol (CBD), a cannabinoid could down-regulate Id-1 expression in aggressive human cancer cells.

It seems that CBD represents the first nontoxic exogenous agent that can significantly decrease Id-1 expression in metastatic breast cancer cells leading to the down-regulation of tumour aggressiveness. [Mol Cancer Ther 2007;6(11):29217]
